  1. Congrats! So glad you got your heart's desire! I would love to hear why you wanted Guinea.

  2. A month ago I'd never heard of the place, and it's not exactly a garden spot, but it checks a lot of boxes for me. It gives me a chance to get my French up to 3/3 and thus get off language probation. The job is one year consular and one year econ, which lets me fulfill my consular requirement and work in my cone. After several years of being just barely solvent, the hardship differential and the lack of things to spend money on will help me build up a savings cushion. I can apply for the student loan repayment program, which would make a nice dent in that pesky debt of mine.

And I figure if I can make it in Conakry, I can make it anywhere.

  3. That's great! I love how in the FS, one person's high is another's low and it all works out. I lived in Niger for 2 years and it was hard, but it also had so many advantages and beautiful places/moments and it sounds like your assignment is perfect for you! Congratulations! Looking forward to meeting you in Jan. I will add you to my blogroll.

  4. My husband and I are going to Guinea as well. I'm glad to see that you're so excited for it. I'm well, just getting used to the idea. I'm sure our paths will cross at some point. Congratulations!

  5. @Anne: Hooray! I'm eager to meet the people I'll be spending the next two years with. It'll be less scary once you feel like you're going with friends.
